First-ever app to pay – and save – at the pump now available statewide

Framingham, Mass; June 21, 2012 – Cumberland Farms, a leading convenience and gasoline retailer, announced today that the company’s innovative SmartPay app – the first app that allows customers to pay at the pump using a smartphone – is now available at all of its 170 Massachusetts locations.

SmartPay, which was created in partnership with PayPal and launched at 50 pilot locations in April, gives customers the convenience of quickly starting the pump from a mobile phone and the security of processing the transaction through trusted online payment leader PayPal. The app works on any smartphone through a web browser, and native iPhone and Android apps are available through their respective app stores. Additionally, consumers who use SmartPay receive a five-cent per gallon discount. Details are available at www.cumberlandfarms.com/smartpay.

“We’ve had a great response to SmartPay from customers, which has encouraged us to expand the program,” said Cumberland Farms President Ari Haseotes. “We are committed to introducing innovative products that fit our customers’ busy lifestyles. We look forward to continuing to explore new offerings in this area.”

SmartPay service benefits:

  • Available for iPhone and Android, and any other smartphone with a mobile browser
  • 5¢ per gallon discount
  • Security of using PayPal for payment
  • Can be activated while still in the comfort of the car
  • Receipt sent by email so total spend and discount amount is easy to track

In addition to the expansion of SmartPay, Cumberland Farms has launched a summer marketing campaign focused on generating trial of its 99-cent Farmhouse Blend iced coffee, featuring a television campaign with actor David Hasselhoff. Additionally, the company continues its chain-wide remodeling initiative and new fresh food and beverage introductions.
