Amazon.com Will Collect State Sales Tax in 2013

The Internet retailer said the collection would begin in time for next year's holiday shopping season.

Checking out at Amazon.com will be a little pricier starting next November.

Gov. Deval Patrick's office announced the deal Tuesday, stating the company would be adding jobs to Massachusetts in the next few years.

Amazon.com and Patrick said they would work together to support a federal bill allowing individual states to collect sales tax in states where they have no physical location.

"I value the contributions large and small employers alike make to Massachusetts' economic vitality, and this agreement captures that," said Patrick, in a statement. "We are thankful Amazon was willing to come to the table and we will continue our conversations with them about creating jobs here. This agreement is a win for all sides, and I am pleased it promises to generate millions in long-term revenue for the commonwealth.”

Massachusetts Secretary of Administration and Finance Jay Gonzalez said while he's pleased with the progress, that to receive the full benefit of the taxes paid, the feds have to act.

“I appreciate Amazon’s willingness to work with us to reach an agreement that will benefit both the commonwealth’s businesses and Massachusetts taxpayers,” said Gonzalez. “However, Massachusetts and other states will receive the majority of the revenue owed only when Congress passes federal legislation, and we encourage Congress to act."

"...majority of the revenue owed only when Congress passes federal legislation, and we encourage Congress to act.""

A few words to Congress: Don't pass it. Give us a break from the endless taxes. This additional revenue will go straight to the Boston political machine... Seekonk will probably never see a dime of it.

The question: Will this change how you shop online?

Yes, in that I won't target my purchases to Amazon anymore.

My spending just went down... I would buy most anything i could on Amazon so I could save the few bucks in taxes. With the money I saved in taxes I could shop more.
Looks like I have to cut back on spending...

So, will the state get rid of the "use tax" once the major online retailers start collecting sales tax?

Sarah...if you buy something on Amazon right now, you are supposed to pay a use tax.

I won't stop using Amazon because of this law, but it will certainly affect how much I spend. Especially if things like MP3's and other digital downloads also fall under this new tax law.

Every regulation, every tax that govt imposes is a bite into a person's freedom. As of now, we still have the freedom to pick and choose where we shop. Although I don't like the Sales Tax, I enjoy the discounts and the free shipping I receive from Amazon. If, in the long run, my costs are below the business that charges retail prices, I will still shop with Amazon. You know, my $$$ matters to me, The more I can receive for my $$$, the better. Too bad for the local retailer if they can't compete w/discount businesses because, if they wanted business bad enough they, TOO, would find a way to attract people. Why should I drive (gas costs) to a store, wait to be served (time is $$$) and pay full price? I'd be foolish to do so. Online, I stay at home, no crowds and get a better deal Its a "no brainer" for me.

Your troll skills are truly poor, you're only annoying in a "can't this person come up with something better than THAT?" kind of way.
