Not So Despicable Me
This week at the Mansfield Public Library "Despicable Me" on DVD is among the new materials in circulation.
Despicable Me
Marshfield resident Steve Carell*, best known as Michael from the NBC television series The Office, voices the lead character in Despicable Me, a past-his-prime super villain named Gru. Carell's vocal talents are not to be underestimated; his faux-Hungarian accent provides the perfect vehicle for the witty, worldly script.
Upon hearing about the theft of an Egyptian Pyramid at the onset of the film, Gru plans to steal the moon in hopes of pulling off the century’s biggest heist. Gru finds pawns, in the form of three orphaned girls to help pull off his felonious quest. Emotionally the relationships that emerge with the girls prove to be more than Gru had initially bargained for.
The action in the film made by Universal Pictures, is zany, and reminiscent of that of the classic characters of Looney Tunes. The animation is very modern, and ocularly stunning at times. It is extremely similar to the work that the fabulous animation house, Pixar Studios has been turning out for years, films like the (1995-2010) Toy Story series, 2004’s Finding Nemo and my personal favorite film from Pixar, 2007’s kitchen romp, Ratatouille. The drop off in both story and animation from these films, by the greatest animation studio in the world is minimal. This is something the filmmakers of Despicable Me are without doubt, very proud of.
Despicable Me proves to be an interesting and heartwarming film, a tremendous worldwide journey. Both surprising and sentimental. Reserve the film online or come into the library this week!
* On an interesting side note, Carell is the owner of the historic Marshfield Hills General Store. He reports that he works at the store on occasion during the summer months.
