State Looks Nationwide for Surgeon for Michelle Kosilek's Operation
6 surgeons have been found to possibly conduct a sex-change operation on former Mansfield resident and convicted murderer Michelle Kosilek
The surgeon for the sex-change of former Mansfield resident Michelle Kosilek will come out of state according to a new report from the Boston Herald.
Unable to find any qualified surgeons in Massachusetts or New York, State corrections chief Luis S. Spencer expanded the search nationwide and was able to find six qualified doctors. Five of the six were willing to perform the operation with only one refusing due to an unwillingness to apply for a license in Massachusetts.
Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Mark Wolf ruled that to deny Kosilek the surgery would violate the prisoner's protection from cruel and unusual punishment. The decision is being appealed by the state.
Kosilek, who is currently serving a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering his wife, changed his legal name to Michelle almost 20 years ago and is living at MCI-Norfolk state prison.
