Two From Mansfield Dead After Drowning in Cancun

A late night swim turned fatal as two women from Mansfield died while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico.

Two Mansfield women have died after drowning while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico according to WBZ.

The two women, identified as Donna Batta and Gail Binmore, traveled to Cancun for a vacation last Friday along with two other friends.

While one left on Tuesday, the remaining three went for a late night swim at the Grand Park Royal hotel.

With the water reaching their knees, the current was too strong for the three women and North Attleboro resident Lisa Marie Tondreault was the only person to escape the rough waters and strong undertow.

Batta is survived by her husband and both women leave children in their late teens/early 20s.

Not all their children are in their 20s. Some of the surviving children are in high school.

We were there and built a little memorial in the sand where it happened. Our thoughts and prayers to the families.

I just came back from vacationing in Cancun on Saturday and those waters were so strong, even for an avid swimmer. My heart goes out to the families of these women.

The huge flaw with Cancun is that the water is dangerous. There are, virtually, always red flags on the beach warning people not to go into the water. The number one cause of death in Cancun is drowning. The handful of people who do venture into the water are drunk. People go to a popular resort on the beach (the sand never gets hot there contributing to the treachery) with the Caribbean Sea and expect to go swimming. I could never understand why Cancun is the number one vacation destination. There are hundreds/thousands of swimming pools in any city in North America.

My fiance and I were knee deep in the water. She went a couple feet past me and couldn't make it back. We both are extremely in shape (intense workouts four times a week) and could not make it in. It would be our pictures in a story like this had it not been for the lifeguard saving us just in time. I feel for these ladies and their families.
