GREAT WOODS NATURE WALK
Did you know that Mansfield has many miles of walking trails? Join the Natural Resources Trust of Mansfield (NRT) on a guided nature walk in the Great Woods Conservation Area, to explore a few. We will be starting our walk from the Oak Street parking lot on Saturday, October 20th at 10:00 AM. The walk is about 2 miles. Part of the trail may be wet so wear proper shoes. Also, use insect repellent, and bring plenty of water.
The walk will be led by NRT Vice-president Colin Cauldwell. Colin has been instrumental in Mansfield’s effort to preserve the woods. He is also the vice-chairman of the Mansfield Conservation Commission. Colin has walked the trails and guided nature walks for many years.
The Great Woods Conservation Area was acquired by the town and the NRT starting in the early 1970’s. It is the largest collection of protected conservation parcels in Mansfield. Over 700 acres are protected in Mansfield and hundreds more in Norton. The Mansfield Conservation Commission has the care and control of 580 acres and the Natural Resources Trust of Mansfield the remaining 135 acres. It has long been recognized as a significant natural resource area. The Great Woods has many trails through hundreds of acres of woods and fields, with a variety of flora and fauna. The property is open to the public all year round. Trail maps of the Great Woods and other conservation areas are available at the NRT web site www.nrtma.org .
The NRT was established in 1971 to acquire and preserve natural resources and wildlife areas for use and enjoyment of present and future generations; to preserve and protect historic sites; to educate the public about the wise use of our natural resources; and to work with other organizations having similar goals and objectives. The NRT was the prime mover in acquiring the Great Woods Conservation Area as well as protected land throughout Mansfield.
