Keep Mansfield Beautiful Greens Up Roadside Near Downtown Mansfield

Trees, shrubs and flowers replace weeds and litter along Route 106 embankment

Visitors driving eastbound into downtown Mansfield along Route 106 will be greeted by attractive new landscaping, thanks to a project recently completed project by Keep Mansfield Beautiful. Gone are the weeds and litter along the embankment in front of the train station parking lot. In their place are 9 flowering crabapple trees, 150 juniper shrubs, 30 ornamental grasses, and 200 lilies of three different varieties, topped off with 60 cubic yards of spruce mulch.

“We saw there was an opportunity to create a more welcoming appearance to this area, which serves as the gateway to the train station area and downtown Mansfield,” said Neil Rhein, executive director of Keep Mansfield Beautiful. “The combination of the new landscaping along with the Mansfield community mural has really transformed the area and we hope it will lead to more improvements in the future.”

After gaining permission from the Town of Mansfield, Keep Mansfield Beautiful teamed up Selectman Doug Annino and Guerrini Landscape Company to devise an attractive, low maintenance landscape design. The plants and trees were chosen for their ability to withstand high temperatures and drought conditions.

“This project is another example of a long term cooperative effort between the Town, Keep Mansfield Beautiful and the community to continue Mansfield’s position as one of the premier communities in the Commonwealth,” said Mansfield Town Manager Bill Ross.

Funding for one half of the project’s cost came from Keep Mansfield Beautiful’s annual fundraising campaign, which solicits donations from area business owners. “We have received tremendous financial support from local businesses of all sizes over the past seven years,” said Rhein. “These business owners recognize that the work we’re doing creates a more attractive business environment that ultimately makes Mansfield a better place for their customers and their employees.” The Town of Mansfield covered the other half of the project’s cost using funds from the train station parking enterprise fund.
