Relay For Life Seeks Can Donations

Mansfield’s annual fundraiser for The American Cancer Society needs your help to light the annual luminaria bag ceremony.

Mansfield’s Relay For Life planning committee is currently collecting small canned goods that will be used to weigh down the event’s white luminaria bags. The Relay committee is collecting non-perishable food staples such as canned proteins (tuna, chicken, chili), and canned fruits and vegetables in approximately 4 – 7 oz.-sized cans. Donations can be made directly to committee members and during its teams meeting Thursday, May 15, 7 p.m., in the Mansfield High School library, 250 East St.

After the event, the canned goods will be given to Our Daily Bread, Mansfield’s food pantry. Serving those in need from the Mansfield community since 1997, Our Daily Bread: Friends Caring and Sharing is an all-volunteer outreach project of The Orthodox Congregational Church of Mansfield. It serves approximately 90 local families every week to help them balance their meals.

Relay For Life is the nationwide signature activity of the American Cancer Society, and has raised more than $4 billion since its inception in 1985. This is Mansfield’s 10th year hosting a Relay.

The overnight team fundraising event, which has brought together more than 3.5 million people worldwide, invites teams of families, friends, neighborhoods, corporations and community organizations to walk or run around a track in shifts, keeping one member of the team on the track at all times. During the Luminaria Ceremony, typically after sunset, glowing bags are placed around the track inscribed with the names of loved ones lost to cancer or still fighting the battle.

In years past, sand was put in the bottom of the bags to keep them upright and in one spot, but the process of filling and dumping them was time-consuming, and dewy overnights left the sand wet which easily ripped bags.
