COA CINEMA PUB

October Cinema Pub will be on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. The featured presentation will be “The King’s Speech,” starring Colin Firth as England’s King George VI and Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen Mother.

This film, the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Film of 2010, is the story of George’s reluctant ascension to the throne and how he conquered his inability to speak in public. Registrations are now being taken.

Mansfield seniors are invited to join Activities Coordinator, Darcia Jensen at theOctober Lunch Bunch that will be held on Friday, Oct. 14, and is a celebration of Canadian Thanksgiving with Darcia Jensen. Cost is $5 per person. Registrations are limited and will begin on Thursday, Sept. 1. 

The program features a luncheon followed by an enlightening program presented by Mansfield’s Billie Sienna about some of Mansfield’s earliest families and their importance in the history of Mansfield’s development as a community.

Sienna will discuss the cemetery restoration program and the history lessons it has revealed. The cost for this program is $5 per person, and spaces are limited. Pre-registration is required. For information, or to register for this program, call Louise at 508-261-7368.

WELLNESS LUNCH BEGINS
The Council On Aging and the Community Visiting Nurses is offering a Wellness Luncheon Series starting on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Lunch will be held at 11:30 a.m., and the menu includes baked fish with crumb topping, summer corn, zucchini with tomatoes, and pumpernickel bread with butter, watermelon mousse and beverages.

“Making the Most of Change—Managing Life’s Transitions,” will be presented by CVNA’s Bonnie Ryvicker starting at 11:45 a.m. The workshop is free, and the suggested and voluntary donation for lunch is $2 per person. Pre-registration is required and spaces are limited. For reservations, call the COA at 508-261-7368. 

MANSFIELD COA BOOK CLUB
The Mansfield COA is offering a monthly book group starting on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. Led by Doreen Tighe, the book group will be discussing "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Those who previously registered for this group are eligible to attend. Those wishing to join should call the COA at 508-261-7368 to be placed on the waiting list. 

TOWN MANAGER COFFEE SCHEDULED
Town Manager Bill Ross will be at the Council On Aging for a Coffee Hour on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m.. Ross will discuss the latest in town and state business in an informal and friendly setting. Mansfield seniors are encouraged to attend this informative and lively meeting with the town manager. Refreshments will be available. Questions and concerns are always welcome, and pre-registrations are not needed. For information, call the COA at 508-261-73688. 

MEDICARE WORKSHOP OFFERED
The Mansfield COA will be holding a workshop for Medicare recipients on Open Enrollment and Medicare choices on Monday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. Regional SHINE Coordinator Lisa Sarkis will present information about the upcoming changes in the Medicare programs. Refreshments will be served, and registration is required. For information or reservations, call Louise at 508-261-7368. 

GENEALOGY WORKSHOPS TO BE HELD
The COA will be holding two exciting workshops for those who are interested in genealogy and historical records. Mansfield seniors are invited to attend a workshop on Monday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. with Elizabeth Pope from the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, and Monday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. with Jennifer Fauxsmith from the State Archives, Boston. Both speakers will be discussing their collections and online records and how to conduct research at their facilities. A question and answer period will follow their presentations. COA TO HOST REGISTRY OF DEEDS FOR HOMESTEAD ACT
The Mansfield Council On Aging and the Register of Deeds for Northern Bristol County will be holding a workshop on the Homestead Act on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 12:30 pm..

Register of Deeds Barry J. Amaral will be on hand with his staff to discuss the state’s Homestead Act, protections for Massachusetts homeowners under the Declaration of Homestead and how to obtain a Declaration of Homestead. The workshop will include a question and answer period and staff will be available after the workshop for private consultations if participants wish to apply for a Declaration of Homestead.

All homeowners should consider obtaining this protection from creditors for their home. Homeowners who have refinanced are advised that previous Declarations have been invalidated due to a new mortgage and need to reply for a new Declaration. To file a Declaration of Homestead at this workshop, homeowners should bring with them photo identification, a completed application which will be available at the COA and a check or money order for $36 made out to “Registry of Deeds BCND.” All homeowners listed on the deed must be present.
