REGISTER OF DEEDS TO HOLD WORKSHOP

Barry Amaral, the Register of Deeds for Northern Bristol County, will be at the Council On Aging for a Homestead Act workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 12:30 p.m. Amaral and his staff will discuss the Massachusetts Declaration of Homestead and protections offered to Massachusetts homeowners through the Homestead Act.

After the workshop, his staff will be available to assist homeowners in applying for the Declaration of Homestead. Massachusetts’s homeowners of all ages should consider this legal document, which protects the first $500,000 of a home from creditors.

The Declaration of Homestead application may be picked up at the Council On Aging, and should be returned completed and with a check or money order for $36 ($35 filing fee, $1 for mailing) made out to “Registry of Deeds BCND.” All those listed on the property deed are required to be in attendance for the notarizing of the application. In addition, those applying should also bring photo-identification.

Those who have recently remortgaged their homes have invalidated prior Declarations of Homestead, and should consider filing for a new Declaration. Pre-registration for this workshop is required. For additional information, or to make a reservation, please call Louise at 508-261-7368.
