Sturdy Obtains Two New Physicians

Two hematologists/medical oncologists join Sturdy's staff to aid in cancer research and treatment.

The depth of area cancer care expertise is increased with the addition of two hematologists/medical oncologists to the medical staff of Sturdy Memorial Hospital in August.  An office suite at 28 Sturdy Street in Attleboro is in the process of being renovated to accommodate Dr. Jonathan Croopnick and Dr. Colleen Yavarow, who will open the practice on August 22nd.    

Dr. Jonathan Croopnick is an experienced, board certified, and fellowship trained Hematologist and Medical Oncologist.  Dr. Croopnick received his medical degree at the Finch University of Health Sciences at The Chicago Medical School and completed his fellowship training at Boston Medical Center.  He practiced Hematology and Oncology at MetroWest Medical Center for nearly three years before joining Sturdy. 

Dr. Colleen Yavarow recently completed her fellowship training in Hematology and Medical Oncology at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and received her medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Drs. Croopnick and Yavarow join Dr. Alan Weitberg, an experienced, board certified Hematologist and Medical Oncologist, who is currently seeing patients at 159 Pleasant Street in Attleboro until his new colleagues arrive in August. 

Dr. Weitberg earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed his fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.  He was also the Chief of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence for over 20 years.  Appointments with all three doctors can be made by calling (508) 226-0213.

Sturdy Hematology & Oncology Associates is one of fifteen practices managed by Sturdy Memorial Associates and is affiliated with Sturdy Memorial Hospital.  The Cancer Program at Sturdy Memorial Hospital is accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer and received commendation at its most recent survey.

The program includes a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services to meet the cancer needs of area residents including chemotherapy, radiation therapy through Shields Radiation Oncology Center in Mansfield, surgery, imaging and laboratory capabilities, mammography, cancer screenings, and patient education.  A Cancer Care Coordinator ensures the process from cancer diagnosis to treatment is as smooth as possible, and the Cancer Committee reviews oncology program activities, patient care management issues, and develops new plans to benefit cancer patients.

Sturdy Memorial also holds Tumor Board Conferences as a forum for multi-disciplinary consultation and continuing education.  The Board is comprised of surgeons, internists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, and oncology nurses.  Cancer experts provide the staff with input for treatment plans and education.  The group also handles patient care planning for challenging cases.
