BLOG: In the Event of a Power Outage ...

Preparing for a Power Outage

Be Prepared.
You may all recall the events of last year when New England
was impacted by Tropical Storm Irene and areas within our communities
were without power, some for days, others not at all. In the unlikely
event that it could happen again, how can we better prepare ourselves?

Make a Plan:

  • Pay attention to local weather forecasts.
  •  Stock up on drinking water; 1 gallon/person/day.
  •  Test flashlights; have extra batteries.
  •  Have a first aid kit, a 7 day supply of medications, and personal hygeine items.
  •  Charge cell phones and get car chargers
  •  Organize personal papers, including insurance policies, and family and emergency contact information.
  •  Have extra cash

With regard to food:

  • Have a few inexpensive styrofoam coolers
  • Know where you can get ice
  • Get a digital thermometer

In anticipation of possible outages, keep the freezer and refrigerator
doors closed as much as possible. A full freezer will hold food safely
for 48 hours. Use your survival and camping skills; have a way to cook
meals outside on a gas or charcoal grill.

The pain of throwing away hundreds of dollars worth of food is gut-wrenching. Know how to keep food safe to eat, and know how to cook it safely. For additional resources use these helpful links:
