Mansfield Boys Help Raise $476 for the One Fund

Recently, a group of Mansfield kids helped raise money for the One Fund.

More Mansfield residents are doing their part to help raise funds for the One Fund.

Recently on the corner of Willis Street and Park Street, three young boys named Drew Gulley, Kevin McCarthy, and Ben Sapovits had a bake sale with all the proceeds going to the foundation to help benefit those effected by the Boston Marathon Bombing.

The idea for the sale came after Drew and his mother Karen Gulley canceled a planned trip to Boston set for the Thursday after the Marathon. Choosing to avoid the city, both Drew and Karen instead though of alternative ideas of what to do with their day.

"Drew asked if we could have a bake sale where all the money would go to help out the One Fund and the people that had been affected by the Boston Marathon Bombings," Gulley said.

Drew, along with McCarthy and Sapovits helped out with the baking and also ran a lemonade stand at the McCarthy home the day before.

Like other initiatives to raise money for the One Fund in Mansfield, the boys were greeted with great support from neighbors and others who wanted to donate.

"Not only did everyone want to help out the One Fund, they also wanted to support the boys. Once they found out that all the treats were homemade and that Drew had helped make them all, they were psyched!" Gulley said. "People not only purchased the treats and lemonade they were selling, but also donated quite a bit as well. The boys charmed them with the dancing they did to draw attention to the cause."

By the end of the day, the boys raised $476 including a matching donation from an anonymous donor. It was a result that excited the boys and made them proud of their work.

"They impressed themselves, felt important, but also felt that they were helping out with a situation that affected everyone that week," Gulley said, "They found a way to help and to make a difference."

The boys are not done working to help the greater good. Next month, they will participate in Relay for Life to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.
