Mansfield School Committee: Oct. 18 Roundup

A summary of the events at the Mansfield Oct. 18 School Committee meeting.

  • Jordan/Jackson Elementary School Principals Kathleen Podesky and Teresa Murphy came with several students of the school to present the Weather program. The program is a science based initiative that invites two students a day to analyze data from the a weather station in the school and get wind speed, temperature and humidity levels for the day. The weather report also determines whether or not the school's students will have an indoor or outdoor recess.
  •  Director of Food Services for Mansfield Public Schools Dawn Langtry came in and discussed the current meal plan. The presentation dealt with many issues facing food services, but mainly addressed the transition of nutritious food types, for instance the removal of any drink not water, 100 percent juice or milk with more than 22 grams of sugar. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 brought about this transition, to be implemented in the next year. Langtry said the transition is already underway and Mansfield will be ahead of the curve for the law.
  •  Qualters Middle School Principal Zeffro Gianetti discussed the Qualters improvement plan to the committee. The plan encompassed much in the school, but focused on maximizing the use of the new teachers hired since the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
  •  Continued Hours At Mansfield Public Schools (CHAMPS) Director Shawna Leary discussed the current status of the after school band, orchestra and piano teaching programs at Jordan/Jackson
  •  Mansfield Public Schools received word that they have received $242,873 in Medicaid reimbursement for the town.
  •  Mansfield Public Schools Director of Finance and Operations Edward Vozzella went through some of the problems the district will face in the new year's budget.
  •  The Mansfield School Committee approved the Qualters field trip to the Trinity Rep Theater for their production of A Christmas Carol 5-0.
