Obituary: Richard A. Silva

Richard A. Silva, 78, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the beloved husband of Helen L. (Barrett) Silva.

Born in Boston, MA on Aug. 27, 1934, he was a son of the late Albert and Hazel (Smythe) Silva. He grew up in the Readville section of Boston and was a graduate of Boston Latin High School, and had also attended Boston University.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Silva had worked for several years as a bench mechanic at the Black Bear Tool Co. in Canton. He had formerly been employed as a maintenance engineer at Norwood Hospital and was the former proprietor of Supply Service, a hardware store owned and operated by his family at Fields Corner in Dorchester.

A resident of Mansfield for the past 42 years, Dick was a lifetime member and a Sergeant of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He was also a member and current treasurer and secretary of the American Air Mail Society.

Dick was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and when younger was a member of the United States Army Reserve. His interests included reading and discussing politics.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted sons, Michael A. Silva and his wife Melanie of Attleboro and Richard T. Silva and his wife Jenny of San Francisco, California. He was the dear brother of Walter Silva of Lincoln, Maine, Dorothy Grady and her husband Dan of Westwood and Ruth Pellegrini of Readville. He was the cherished grandfather of Matthew, Meghan and Lenora Silva and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Monday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 21, from 4-7 p.m.at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.

In lieu of flower’s donations in Richard’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St., Mansfield, MA 02048.
