Sharon Credit Union Robbed Thursday Afternoon

Two men, one of them using a semi-automatic handgun, were able to escape Sharon Credit Union with an undisclosed amount of money after holding up the bank a little before 1:30 pm.

Walking into the bank wearing black hoodies, sunglasses, hats, and clothing to conceal the bottom their faces, the two men took over the bank and demanded money while showing the gun to the tellers.

The Volvo used as a getaway car was found abandoned on South Walnut Street.

Remembering Beth A. Flint

Beth A. (Bennett) Flint, age 52, of Mansfield, passed away surrounded by her adoring family, in the comfort of her home, on Thursday, January 31, 2013. She was the beloved wife of Donald B. Flint, to whom she was wed on May 15, 1982.

She was born in Rome, N.Y., April 25, 1960 and was a loving daughter of the late Lewis E. and Leah L. (Etu) Bennett.

Beth grew up in Rome, N.Y. and was a 1978 graduate of the Rome Free Academy. She furthered her education to become a 1980 graduate of the State University of New York at Cobleskill where she had studied secretarial skills.

A resident of Mansfield for more than 30 years, Beth was a familiar and well known face in the Mansfield community. She assisted her husband, Don, along with other family members in the day to day operations of the Flint Farm in East Mansfield.

As far as weeks go in the regular season go, it’s been a good one for the Mansfield Hornets boys’ basketball team. After being ranked number 1 in the Boston Herald’s and ESPN Boston’s top 25, the Hornets beat the Davenport’s best in Milford. Then in a game that got moved up a day due to the expected arrival of up to two feet of snow, the Hornets beat Taunton 45-41 in a defensive struggle to clinch the Kelley-Rex Division title.

The win represents Mansfield’s third league championship in four years.

School Budget Shaping Up

Mansfield School Committee Chairman Michael Trowbridge said that the fiscal situation in Mansfield may be improving.

“Not to be real optimistic, but we’re $1.1 million above what we were expecting,” he said. “Realize it’s still early in the process and there are a lot of things we need to shake out.”

Mansfield Schools Superintendent Brenda Hodges said that to maintain level services, the district still needs $500,000 for what the current projections are. She said that everyone in the joint budget subcommittee strongly believe that chapter 70 state funding will be level funded at 2.5 percent for 2013, since Gov. Deval Patrick’s budget did not cut into state funding for schools.

“It’s a moving target really until you get to May,” she said.

Hodges added that both the town and the schools are looking for additional sources of revenue. She said, for instance, that the health care costs for the schools has most likely been estimated on the high side, and through negotiations and actual costs may be lowered.
