Menorah Lighting at Plymouth Rock

 This year, thanks to an extremely rare convergence, Thanksgiving (Nov. 28) falls during the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Some are calling it “Thanksgivukkah.”

On this night, just once in history, Thanksgiving and Chanukah will coincide. Two celebrations of religious freedom come together at one epic event.  Chabad Jewish Centers of Massachusetts will Menorah Lighting at Plymouth Rock. Wednesday, November 27, 6:00 pm at Pilgrim Memorial State Park- Water Street, Plymouth MA.

Unite with fellow Americans and State Officials to light the first Chanukah candle and join in a celebration of freedom. And other dignitaries are expected to attend a menorah lighting ceremony at Plymouth Rock to mark the beginning of Hanukah, the eight-day celebration that commemorates the victory of a small army of Jews, known as the Maccabees, over the much larger Syrian Greek army in 139 B.C.

After the Menorah Lighting Ceremony, there will be singing of Hannukah songs and dancing. Organizers of the lighting will be on hand to pass out light up Menorah necklaces,  chocolate coins and dreidels to children in attendance. Children will get to get a photo opp with Judah the Maccabi Mascot. the hero of the Chanukah Story

The menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum, is lit during the eight-day festival in remembrance of “the miracle of the oil.” According to the holiday, after defeating the Syrian Greek army, the Maccabees only had enough oil to keep the menorah in the Temple of Jerusalem lit for one day, but it miraculously burned for eight.

“It is lit after dark, symbolizing the idea that by people’s actions of trying to do the right thing and doing good, they are able to bring light and push away the darkness,” said Rabbi Yossi Kivman, director of the Chabad of Mansfield will light the first candle of the menorah tonight. “This program is free of charge, Everybody’s welcome.”
