If a tree falls in the forest...

Storm Damage - trees. Who pays?

... and smashes into your house at the edge of the forest, do you have to pay to clean it up? Apparently you do, in some cases. If the tree is owned by your neighbor or perhaps, by the town and you did not send a letter of complaint, prior to the storm, outlining your concern for the damaged, dying, or infested tree-- then YOU will be left holding the bag-- or in this case, the bill for clean-up.

So, be warned, and immediately investigate any and all large trees surrounding your property, whether or not they belong to you. If they are damaged or appear to be an accident waiting to happen, it is your responsibility to send a letter (certified mail) to the property owner, advising them of the situation.

And once you have done this, the owner of the tree is required to take necessary action. And if they do not, at least you will not be legally responsible for possible future damage. Comments and/or corrections are welcome.
