Obituary: Dorothy M. (Unsworth) Powers

Dorothy M. Powers, 70, a former 40 year resident of Mansfield, passed away March 19, 2013.

Dorothy M. (Unsworth) Powers, 70, of Norton, and a former longtime resident of Mansfield, passed away in the comfort of her home Tuesday, March 19, 2013.

She was wife of the late Edward J. Powers Sr. to whom she was wed for over 50 years at the time of his death Aug. 22, 2010.

Born in Boston Sept. 5, 1942, she was daughter of the late Frederick and Mabel (Boire) Unsworth. She grew up in the Roxbury section of Boston and was educated in Boston parochial schools.

Prior to retiring, Mrs. Powers had worked for several years as a customer representative at Paula Young Wigs in Easton. She had previously worked in quality controls at Mansfield Scientific, and following retirement, had assisted her family in the operation of Industrial Precision Coatings, Inc. in Randolph.

Dot’s life was focused around her grandchildren. She had formerly enjoyed summer months spent with family in East Falmouth, boating on Cape Cod and the winter months, along with friends and her late husband at the Breckenridge Community in Estero, Florida.

Dorothy resided in Norton for the past two years and was a former 40 year resident of Mansfield. She enjoyed shopping and decorating. She always presented herself quite fashionably and was a member of the Red Hatters Society in Florida.

Dorothy leaves her son Edward J. Powers Jr. and his wife Kerri of Norton; her son in law Jeffrey Batta of Mansfield; her grandchildren Janelle Batta of New York, Kyle Batta of Florida, Craig Batta of Mansfield and Colby Powers and Devin Powers both of Norton; and her nephew Robert D’Addario of Sandwich. She was preceded in death by her sister Eleanor D’Addario and her daughter Donna M. Batta, who recently passed away Jan. 8, 2013.

Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held Sunday, March 24 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 N. Main St., Mansfield.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m. at the conclusion of visiting hours at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Dot’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter, 175 Fruit St., Mansfield, MA 02048.
