Obituary: John MacKinnon

The following is the obituary for John Y. MacKinnon of Mansfield.

John Y. MacKinnon, 55, of Mansfield, passed away in the presence of his loving family on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was the beloved husband of Donna H. (Hennessy) MacKinnon, to whom he was wed on June 29, 1985.

Born in Boston, MA on September 25, 1957, he was a loving son of Margaret L. (Greene) MacKinnon of Dedham and the late George Y. MacKinnon, Sr.

John grew up and was educated in Dedham, and was a 1975 graduate of Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury. He furthered his education and graduated in 1980 from Northeastern University with a degree in civil engineering.

For over 30 years, Mr. MacKinnon was employed as a civil engineer at H.W. Moore Associates in Boston. He had made his home in Mansfield for the past 26 years and was a formerly of Dedham.

A communicant of St, Mary’s Church in Mansfield, John enjoyed spending time with his loving family and camping. He will always be remembered for his wit and good natured sense of humor.

In addition to his beloved wife and mother, he is survived by his devoted daughters, Jillian L. MacKinnon and Devon M. MacKinnon both of Mansfield. He was the dear brother of George Y MacKinnon, Jr. of Lunenburg, James Y. MacKinnon and his wife Karen of Mansfield, Sheila M. Cook and her husband Lawrence of Hanson and Paul G. MacKinnon and his wife Linda of Virginia. He was the son- in- law of Claire Hennessy of Norwood and the late Justin Hennessy, Jr., and the brother- in- law of Marie Hennessy of Malden, Justin Hennessy Jr. and his wife Karen of Norwood, Theresa Hill of Malden and Claire-Marie Ryan and her husband John of Norwood. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

His Funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday, October 25th at 9:30 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, October 24th from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, John’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215.
