Patch Book Club: 'Bossypants'

This week we discuss the comedic autobiography of actress, comedian and writer Tina Fey.

We're big readers here at Patch, and in that light, we thought it would be a good idea to get a discussion going on what books we editors and our readers are reading lately.

But the discussion only begins with us. If you've read this week's highlighted book, let us know what you thought of it, and suggest other books for future discussion.

"Bossypants" is a non-traditional autobiographical novel written by actress and comedian Tina Fey. Fey is most well-known for her work on TV shows "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock," the latter of which she created and stars in.

The book is an entertaining and smartly written journey through Fey's life and career, with some often tongue-in-cheek bits of wisdom shared along the way. From awkward tales of growing up to what it was like to be a female comedian on SNL and how "30 Rock" came into being, Fey's comedic style makes the book a real pleasure to read.

Now many remember Fey best for her SNL portrayal of Sarah Palin during the 2008 election season. The initial sketch, written by Seth Meyers and performed by Fey with Amy Poehler, was a mock joint appearance between Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. Here's a little of what Fey says about the experience in "Bossypants":

"This sketch easily could have been a dumb catfight between two female candidates. What Seth and Amy wrote, however, was two women speaking out together against sexism in the campaign.... Amy's line 'Although it is never sexist to question female politicians' credentials' was basically the thesis statement for everything we did over the next six weeks. Not that anyone noticed. You all watched a sketch about feminism and you didn't even realize it because of the jokes. It's like when Jessica Seinfeld puts spinach in kids' brownies. Suckers!"

Whether because of such SNL shenanigans or the popularity of Fey due to "30 Rock" or her movie appearances, or simply because of its sharp and critical writing, when "Bossypants" was released last year it spent five weeks at the top of the New York Times Best Seller list.

Have you read "Bossypants"? What did you think? Tell us in the comments!

I read it with my bookclub awhile back and I loved it! TIna Fey is hilarious! I was even a bigger fan of hers after I finished reading it. She is a very talented comedienne, actress, and writer.
