Chief O'Neill: Doubtful That WBC Shows Up

Mansfield Police Chief Arthur O'Neill has said that he believes it is unlikely the Westboro Baptist Church will show up on Tuesday.

Responding to a press release from the Westboro Baptist Church announcing their intent to picket a funeral in Mansfield on Tuesday morning, Mansfield Police Chief Arthur O’Neill said that the Mansfield PD are aware of the release and will have officers in the area in the event that the extremist group does show up. While O'Neill appreciates the public support against what he called a revolting group, he has also asked the community to not help create a spectacle on Tuesday.

"Please let the police do their job and not have a spectacle. We can take care of the job and you can count on us to do it" O'Neill said in a statement to Patch.

While being prepared, O'Neill expressed doubt about if the church would show up to protest.

"Often the history is that they say they are coming but often they do not," O'Neill said.

Friday night, the Westboro Baptist Church issued a press released claiming they would protest the funeral Michael J. Greene. While they often announce protests, they have been known to not show up.

Isn't a community coming together to show support for this family the ultimate sign of support? It's not a spectacle.

We can support without being a spectacle, right ? I understand that we don't need to make a non-situation into a news event, but the WBC "started it". They announced it in a press release, and we're responding. But we can do it quietly, respectfully and on the sidelines.

And if all these mansfield residents come together to support a family and ensure these hate mongers aren't heard, I think that's more powerful than a non showing or risking a picket by them.

Ignore them and they wont show, thats how they operate. They go from place to place to incite lawsuits which is how they finance their "church". If they get a huge response from a town they'll see that its worth it to go seeing theres a higher chance of an incident to occur in which to profit from. If they get no response it wont be worth their time.

They didn't show up in Newtown..

you might have a point there. still, i'd feel horribly if we let it go and they showed.

I understand that they may not show, but as a former soldier and as a resident of Mansfield I will not take a chance,I will be there in respect for the LtCol. And his family, God Bless America and those who defend her.

In case anyone didn't see the other post on this, Rev. Newcomb of the Congregational Church is holding a meeting at 2 p.m Sunday to discuss a peaceful demonstration in support of the family. Also, there is little public space around St. Mary's. The lot is private, there is a snow bank between the sidewalk and the parking lot and there is no public sidewalk across the street.

I may not make the meeting as I have ever-going car issues and am trying to avoid a cracked engine block...but a question for the house: where would we park? we can't take up space at the church- we cannot let this interfere with the funeral. Can't park on street. So this may have to be a drive-by dropoff. Which is fine, but adds another element of safety concern and traffic congestion, which again, is something we can't have.

It's mansfield, not Boston. Find a place to park and start walking. Also get a new car, you aren't going to "avoid" a cracked block.

Troll much? ^^I was referring to being reluctant to drive as my coolant leaks and so does the oil. If you'd like to buy me a new car, be my guest. :) I do my best to keep my 2003 on the road because I don't throw things away if I can fix it :D

BH, could you pick up Tina Mqs on your way to St. Mary's?
Tina Mqs February 18, 2013 at 02:33 AM
LOL! .S'okay, I'll ride the broom. And then I won't have to worry about parking either :)
BH February 18, 2013 at 06:11 AM
Just found it odd to be tossing around a potential for a car maybe breaking down and maybe not great parking as reasons not to show up when you are claiming you want to show support for a soldier who lost his life defending us. His task seemed a million times more difficult than a simply showing up to support the family and community.

Ok- a misunderstanding-I meant to go to the meeting yesterday! I would def find a way to go Tues. :)
