Highway Accident Sends Two to Hospital

High winds, bitter cold hamper rescue efforts.

A one-car rollover accident at 6:39 a.m. this morning at the junction of  I-95 and I-495 at Exit 13 in Foxboro sent two people to the hospital with “substantial non-life threatening injuries” said Mansfield Fire Chief Neal Boldrighini.

According to Bolrighini, a car traveling northbound on I-495, apparently hit a snow bank and flipped over, coming to rest between two trees off the highway. Units from Mansfield, Foxboro, Plainville and the State Police responded to the accident, using the Jaws of Life to extricate the male driver of the car.

A female passenger was ejected from the car.

Boldrighini said rescue workers were forced to cut down the trees surrounding the car to free the driver. Efforts were further hampered by high winds and bitter cold. Medflight was unable to transport the male driver due to the high winds.

Both victims were transported to Rhode Island Hospital via Foxboro and Mansfield ambulance.

According to an early morning e-mail from the Massachusetts State Police, the accident involved a 1995 Mercury Sable sedan and 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix. Boldrighini was unable to confirm the presence of the second vehicle.

Boldrighini said traffic was backed up on I-495, I-95 and Route 140 in Mansfield until the accident scene was cleared about 8 a.m. this morning.
