Nephew Accused of Shooting Local Rap Mogul Claims Self-Defense

Benzino, who runs Hip-Hop Weekly and starred in the reality television series ''Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta," was shot by Gai Scott, of Randolph, police said.

The nephew of music mogul Benzino claimed he acted in self-defense when police said he shot Benzino during a funeral procession in Duxbury over the weekend.

Benzino, 48, of Mansfield, was recovering at South Shore Hospital after he was shot in the arm and back. He gave a bedside interview describing the shooting.

"I'm more embarrassed than anything," he said in the interview, posted by NEHip-Hop. His real name is Raymond Scott.

The nephew, Gai Scott, 36, of Randolph, was charged with assault with intent to murder. Police said Benzino was driving a sport utility vehicle on Route 3 during his mother's funeral procession when Scott pulled up and fired into the vehicle, striking Benzino twice.

Scott claimed he acted in self-defense, saying his uncle pulled up beside him and said threatened to kill him, according to Boston.com.

Scott on Wednesday was ordered held without bail, according to Boston.com.
