No One Hurt in Ware Street Fire

Family displaced by kitchen fire in their home.

A Mansfield family of four is safe but displaced from their single family home at 792 Ware St. after a kitchen fire caused "significant damage" to the kitchen and family room Saturday night, according to Mansfield Fire Lieutenant John Terry.

"Nobody was hurt, but they are displaced. ... a family of four and a pet cat," Terry said.

The cause of the fire is believed to be from a lighting fixture in the kitchen but the Mansfield Fire Department is still investigating.

"We can't say for sure it was the light fixture but we are saying most probable cause of the fire was the light fixture," said Terry. "That is what we came up with during our investigation of the origin of the fire. We believe it was an issue with either the wiring inside or something with the light bulb sparking inside."

Mansfield Fire Department received a 911 call from the residence at 7:26 p.m. describing smoke in the kitchen and the fire detectors going off.

"The teenage daughter was home at the time," Terry said. "She was upstairs and heard the smoke detectors sounding. She came downstairs, saw the smoke condition in the kitchen and left the house and called 911 from the driveway from her cell phone."

Terry said the Mansfield fire chief Neal Boldrighini was first to respond and Terry's engine was the first on scene. A second engine arrived later to provide protection, according to Terry. "We got there and smoke was showing," Terry said. "We got inside and flames> were pretty much rolling across the ceiling."

Terry said there was significant damage to the cabinets, walls and ceiling> as well as water damage, smoke, soot.

"I would say [the cost of the damage is] going to be in the $1,000s," Terry said. "I don't know what it costs to replace a kitchen but they're going to have to gut the kitchen and there's water damage going downstairs to a> finished room."

There's also electrical damage and the family will have to replace fixtures. Red Cross was called to the scene to "handle the logistics" of placing the family, Terry said.
