Mansfield COA Gets $2K from Rep. Poirier

Representative Elizabeth A. Poirier came to the Wednesday Mansfield Board of Selectmen’s meeting to present $2,000 to the Mansfield Council on Aging.

Poirier presented the check to the COA for extra funds that were raised at the 2012 Senior Spectacular.

“We had over 100 vendors come and show their wares,” Porier said. “We had over 100 raffle prizes, several grand prizes, workshops to help give [participating seniors] knowledge on certain areas… All in all a fantastic day. “

The event was put on through sponsorships and vendor fees, and the surplus was passed on to local senior centers in this case.

Mansfield COA executive director Gale Farrugia said this was the second senior spectacular they have put on.

“By all affairs, this has been the biggest,” she said. “I was very proud to work with the committee.”

The event had a total of 1,200 participating seniors, and also included medical screenings, breakfast and lunch. Poirier said that Farrugia and the Mansfield COA worked on the event for over a year.

“Ms. Gale Farrugia, along with several other terrific people on the committee who really have the seniors at the forefront at what they do asked, ‘What can we do to improve [seniors’] quality of life.”

Mansfield selectman Doug Annino said that the Mansfield senior community would be at a loss without Porier.

“You’re tremendous,” he said. “You work hard and you’re out there. You really appreciate [seniors’] needs. It’s a lot of work, and we really appreciate your guidance in making that center a success.”

Selectman Jess Aptowitz said he has more concerns with the financial logistics than anything else.

“Where do you keep the gigantic check book?” he said.
