Mansfield Looking to Fill Key Town Employee Positions

Mansfield interviewing town clerk candidates and looking into a replacement for retiring Police Chief Arthur O'Neil.

The town of Mansfield is seeing retirements in two key positions in town. Mansfield Town Clerk Helen Christian announced her retirement months ago and Police Chief Arthur O'Neil also recently said he is looking to retire.

Town Manager William Ross said last week that he will be talking to town clerk candidates this week and narrowing down the choices. He said a great attention to details is a must for the position.

"[Town Clerks] are very intense about making sure the rules are followed in elections and other town issues," he said. "They have to be. If [the clerk] doesn’t handle the rules properly, for example a marriage could void. You have to follow the laws on that and do it right."

Ross said that for the Police Chief position, the town will be looking into current officers to fill the vacancy.

"O'Neil’s done an excellent job in recruiting quality people and training them," he said. "We have qualified internal candidates and we want to give them the oppertunity."
