Mansfield Residents Will Have to Use Their Own Stamps For Census Forms

Town Clerk Marianne Staples argued that eliminating postage would save Mansfield money.

The Mansfield Board of Selectmen voted to discontinue business reply mail for census forms at the suggestion of Town Clerk Marianne Staples, who said paying for postage was a "frivolous expense."

Staples said the Town pays about $8,750 to send a return envelope to $10,000 Mansfield residents at $1.25 per envelope, $0.46 per stamp, a $0.79 handling charge and a $200 permit fee for bulk mailings.

The Selectmen voted unanimously in favor of Staples' proposal but stipulating that census mailing would still include a return envelop and a disclaimer that residents will now have to use their own stamps to mail in the forms.

"This is a great idea," said Selectman Doug Annino. "This is going to save us some money. This is a step in the right direction."
