Selectmen Moran Won't Run For Re-election

Kevin Moran will end his tenure on the Board of Selectmen as Chairman Jess Aptowitz runs for a third term.

Selectman Kevin Moran announced last week that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming town elections in May, according to the Sun Chronicle

Moran, a Hyde Park Native, had only served on the Animal Welfare Committee before being elected to the board in 2008. He said that he had a "gut feeling" to throw his hat in the ring then, just as he has the same feeling to step down. He said he wants to spend more time with his sons, 17 and 14.

Chairman Jess Aptowitz, whose term also ends in May, decided to run for a third, three-year term. He hasn't decided which issues to focus on during his campaign, but said that selectmen must keep things moving in the right direction going forward.

I know, more fiscal oversight of salary increases and overtime, less commercial development, more community outreach by police and a stop to a ridiculous 13.6 million dollar dpw proposal. Just a few starting points...

Ugh, thanks for the reminder about the DPW Taj Mahal they want to build.

So pleased to see that Selectman Jess Aptowitz will run for another 3 year term. His experience, knowledge and dedication to the Community is a huge plus to a Town that is growing and changing every day. Sincere best wishes in his campaign.

Jeri, I agree Jess has been one of the best officials we have had, hope he continues to do right by the residents and cuts these exorbitant salaries and costs.

Other than the old police chief retiring, what has JA done to cut salaries and costs?
BH January 29, 2014 at 05:48 PM
It's tough to alter salaries, however he should voice some disdain for the rubber-stamp increases and the amount if OT police, fire and electric dept get. He also needs to lead the way in calling out the ridiculous cost of the proposed dpw building.

JA has toed the line with the rest of the board and done an average job. As Chairman he recently voted in favor of full time benefits for the two part time employees. He voted in favor of significant police/fire details for the auto parts swap meet at Great Woods (which was a flip-flop from his nay vote last spring). He voted in favor of a new, third, PD Lieutenant. The board has done well recently in respecting the opinions of the PD, FD and other departments. The two Chiefs and their philosophies are an asset to the community. That being said (JA's signature term) I don't think JA has lead the way or shown much disdain for rubber-stamp increases. That's GD's department.

Interesting T Collins, I'm always willing to learn. I've always been curious why can't we have a fiscally responsible official/leader in this country that doesn't try to push their ultra conservative personal beliefs on someone. It would be a nice change

well it was fun folks! this may be our last story thanks for all the hard work Jeff!
BH January 30, 2014 at 12:20 AM
Yeah, what's the deal Jeff? Is this patch going away? Would you start your own Mansfield website/blog?
HJ January 30, 2014 at 07:58 AM
I just read that this morning. I hope the Patch doesn't go away. It's the best source for news in Mansfield and Jeff does a great job.

What a shame. I've really enjoyed the stories and comments.

Anyone have an alternative site in the event Patch goes dark?
Randomansfield January 31, 2014 at 10:09 AM
I don't think it is going to go dark, I think they just laid off all the local editors so the patch is probably just going to update us on stuff like puxatawny phil from now on...kind of pointless...talk about a death spiral...its like Obamacare
Kevin January 31, 2014 at 10:43 AM
yeah, T Collins, talkmansfield.com
T Collins January 31, 2014 at 05:22 PM
I'm hoping this service stays. I know breaking stories don't get immediate play here, but anyone can start a discussion or start a blog on any subject. Thanks to the editors of Patch.

talkmansfield.com .

Respectfully, I was on talkmansfield a while back and found it too extreme and rumorish for my tastes. Kind of embarrassing to be representative of the town. Please stop pushing it.
Tina Mqs February 01, 2014 at 10:23 AM
There can be rumors there, and there's valid info there too- but that's part of the purpose- to try to clear out what is true and what's rumor. I mention the site because there's room to discuss things in a format easier to follow than on Patch or elsewhere. You can read here on Patch and you won't have all the info, either, and people are just as likely to post rumors on here as tm or anywhere else. It's the nature of the beast when you have people who have an opinion and are trying to find things out. It's ok if it's not for you, but I like it just fine and will mention it if warranted. People have no problem discussing or recommending local biz or whatnot, this is the same idea, really. Anyways, if you feel it's too 'rumorish and extreme', maybe you could contribute over there and even things out a little! I won't bug you any more about it though :)

TalkMansfield is the worst, especially that immature people that try to push it and insult fellow residents (not you Tina)
Tina Mqs February 01, 2014 at 12:11 PM
How do you know i'm on there when i use a top-secret pseudonymn? lol Anyways, there's a lot of opinionated people and a lot of strong feelings about stuff. People need a place for that. I usually have more than my share of things to say, for sure!
Tina Mqs February 01, 2014 at 03:47 PM
Where'd Dan Libon ever go to anyways? I see him on twitter but i have no idea where he disappeared to. (Gee Tina, why don't you just ask him?! lol)

Glad to see Patch hanging in there even if we get too many national stories.
