Letter to the Editor: Highlighting Mansfield Special Olympians

From Kim Piro.

I am writing today to shine a spotlight on a Mansfield high school senior who planned a very special afternoon for 20 of Mansfield High’s special Olympians.  Robbie Lawrence decided to use his senior project to highlight his peers with special needs as they as they work hard toward achieving their goals on April 27.  He planned a pep rally in the high school gym complete with band, cheerleaders, percussion group and a dance from the upcoming musical, West Side Story.  He featured each individual special Olympic athlete with his or her own poster of encouragement and each athlete received a varsity letter.  I was invited to this special event because my daughter was one of those 20 athletes who were honored.

It is an absolute understatement to say this was a well planned event.  Robbie went above and beyond to make this event special and I don’t think anyone in that high school gym walked away without an immense sense of pride for this young boy and what he accomplished.  With his efforts he made 20 already special people feel even more special.  I think I speak for all the parents there when I say I am proud to be part of a town that has this type of teenager as a representative.

The event was something my daughter and I will never forget.  It showed such incredible support and acceptance of all individuals who strive to reach goals.  Thank you Robbie for a memory that I will hold dear for years to come.  I have no doubt you will achieve greatness in your future.

Sincerely,

Kim Piro
