Mansfield Boys Soccer Beat Foxborough 3-1

Despite controlling the opening 30 minutes, the Warriors fall 3-1 to the Hornets.

After taking a 3-2 victory over , it looked like the Warriors were in a good position to get another win over the rival Hornets. Despite controlling the opening 30 minutes, it was Mansfield who found a path to victory. Getting two key goals towards the end of the first half, the Hornets walked away with a 3-1 victory to split the regular season series with Foxborough.

Early on it seemed that it was only a matter of time before Foxborough was going to get one past Mansfield. Defending against multiple Warriors’ corner kicks and chances near the net, the Hornets struggled to get the ball out of their end or get anything going offensively.

“We had plenty of chances in the beginning. Sawyer had a couple of shots and if he took those home, the game could have gone differently,” said Foxborough coach Pat Nash.

Mansfield finally got momentum in the 32nd minute after Andrew Hayes scored to give Mansfield the lead. The goal gave life to a team that was struggling and turned the whole game around.

“It got us to finally wake up. Took us 30 minutes to wake up before we started playing,“ said Mansfield coach Steve Sheridan.

It was the start of what would be a very good day for Hayes. Getting the ball up to Danny Sarkis at the 39th minute, Sarkis was able to break through the Foxboro defense to score on a one on one goal in front of the net and give Mansfield a 2-0 lead and an assist to Hayes.

“He just did all by himself. Beautiful 1 on 1,” said Sheridan.

Despite Foxborough’s best efforts, the Hornets had the breaks and the luck on this particular day. This was most clear in the 68th minute when Hayes scored his second goal of the game after Foxborough goalkeeper Nick Adair couldn’t handle the shot.

“I keep telling my guys you never know what’s going to happen if you don’t shoot,” said Sheridan. “That was a perfect example.”

With time ticking down, the Warriors were able to get a late goal from Brandon Fowler in the 74th minute with the assist credited to Andrew Geffers.

“Geffers worked hard. He went up with the keeper and then Fowler was able to bang that home. Unfortunately it was too little too late,” said Nash.

With the loss Foxborough is now 4-5-0 with eight points in the league standings while the Hornets are 2-4-3 with seven points.

Next up for the Warriors will be another heavily-rivaled game. The Red Rocketeers of North Attleboro High School will travel to Foxborough on Thursday Oct. 6 for a 3:30 p.m. matchup. Mansfield will return home Thursday for a match against the Sharon Eagles at 3:45 p.m.
