Mansfield Field Hockey Overtakes Foxborough

Mansfield beats Foxboro with a 1-0 win after scoring on a 5 minute power play.

Foxborough coach Melissa Bordieri is going to have to wait at least a few  more days for win number 100. A tight game between two rivals ended in one of the rarest ways as far as field hockey goes. Scoring on a late power play, the Hornets broke a scoreless tie to walk away with a 1-0 win.

The lone goal was not without controversy. After Katie Ennis did not give Mansfield seven yards on a free hit, the official penalized Ennis with a yellow card and a 5-minute penalty to give the Hornets a power play with 8:24 left in the game.

“That hurt us no doubt,” said Bordieri

The harsh penalty, which was given after Ennis received a green card as a warning for the same infraction in the first half, was seen as a very strict ruling.

“It seemed like the punishment was a little stronger than the crime. Its really just an encroachment foul,” said Mansfield coach Theresa DeGirolamo. “It was a big penalty for such a minor foul.”

Foxborough was able to press offensively for the first couple minutes of the power play but their disadvantage became evident when Mansfield regained possession. With a man advantage, Meg Carroll was able to find Megan Doherty near the net for the goal and a 1-0 lead with 5:49 left to play.

“Once we got it in to our attacking zone we had someone available because that girl was off the field,” said DeGirolamo.

Despite getting chances, Foxborough couldn’t find the tying goal and fell to their rival 1-0. It was a tough loss for a team that played well throughout the entire game.

“It was a well-played game on both parts. We were definitely in it,” said Bordieri.

Mansfield improves to 4-2-2 with the win while Foxboro is now 6-3. They remain in second place in the Davenport Division behind Canton.

Coach Bordieri and the Warriors will have another chance at win 100 on Thursday Oct. 6 when they visit North Attleboro. The Hornets will travel to Sharon High School on Wednesday Oct. 5.
