Mansfield High School to hold a “Green Week” as part of Senior Project

A senior at Mansfield High School is putting together a green week at MHS

Lexie Raczka, a senior at Mansfield High School, is culminating her Senior Project by holding
a “Green Week” the week of April 25, 2011. According to Lexie, “The reason why I am doing
this is to show the Mansfield High School community how easy it is to be environmentally
conscious and that the benefits are much broader than to the environment alone.”

∗ Each day will have some sort of event to promote environmental consciousness
throughout the school community. The schedule of events is as follows:
∗ Monday: Students and faculty are encouraged to wear green to show their support of the
environmental movement
∗ Tuesday: Students and faculty are encouraged to bring waste-free lunches to reduce the
amount of trash generated by the school
∗ Wednesday: Students and faculty are encouraged to walk to school to reduce their impact
on the environment through their modes of transportation
∗ Thursday: Students and faculty can bring old, worn out sneakers to the school lobby to be
recycled into athletic surfaces through Nike’s Reuse a Shoe Program
∗ Friday: Students and faculty are encouraged to carpool to school to show a more realistic
approach to “greening” their modes of transportation. Green Schools Environmental
Summit will also be taking place where Raczka will discuss her project
∗ This “Green Week” summarizes Raczka’s Senior Project which consisted of her
calculating Mansfield High School’s Carbon Foot print and creating a plan of cost-
free and low-cost ways that the school community can become more environmentally
conscious.
∗ Raczka is enrolled at Dickinson College for the Fall of 2011 to study Environmental
Science
