Mansfield Making Strides in MCAS, Preliminary Results

Mansfield Improving in the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System.

This year, Mansfield Public Schools outperformed the Massachusetts state average in the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) in almost every category (with the exception of eighth grade science and engineering)

Mansfield has, in the past , consistently scored above the state average.

Schools superintendent Brenda Hodges said that this year progress is moving forward in terms of state testing.

“I’m very appreciative of the efforts that our teachers, students and parents have made,
she said “I think everyone working together to provide an excellent education to our students is really indicative of our MCAS scores.”

Hodges said that Mansfield made improvements over last year. For instance, Mansfield’s tenth grade scores have improved greatly. Last year, tenth grade math scores had 92 percent proficient or higher and this year that number increased to 94. In tenth grade English Language Arts, that number went from 93 to 98 percent, with no students failing.

“We did make improvements throughout the district,” Hodges said. “We are pretty pleased with our progress and the scores.”

Hodges did say that Mansfield is looking to improve some of their scores. The subgroups, she said, are particularly difficult to get where the state wants them to be because they require more resources and staff than the general student body. These groups include low income ELL, special education etc.

“That’s where you really have to have a number of initiatives,” she said. “[We need] to provide and put in place supports for those students and that is very labor intensive and very staff intensive. That’s really where we know we need to work.”
