Eighth-grader Ashwini Asirwatham of Mansfield going to D.C.

Ashwini Asirwatham of Mansfield, an eighth-grade student at Dayspring Christian Academy of Attleboro, will journey to Washington, D.C., in May to compete in a national spelling bee.

According to DCA Administrator Frank Rydwansky, Asirwatham will journey to the nation’s capital May 12 to compete in the National Spelling Bee coordinated by the Association of Christian Schools International. She placed first in the ACSI Eastern Massachusetts/Rhode Island District competition last fall and fourth in the ACSI Northeast Region event held in late February in Lancaster, Penn., earning the trip to Washington.

Students from ACSI-affiliated schools throughout the United States will join Asirwatham in Washington for the national spelling bee.

The daughter of Wijay and Dharshi Asirwatham of Mansfield, Ashwini narrowly missed a trip to the nation’s capital a year ago when she was designated first alternate after the Region competition.

“I’m so excited and so proud to be going to Washington this year,” Asirwatham said. “I’m already studying up for the trip and I can’t wait to be there. It’s an honor to be entered in a national competition.”

“Understandably, we are very proud of Ashwini’s outstanding academic achievements,” Rydwansky said. “They are certainly a positive reflection on the quality of education our students receive in this school.”

Asirwatham is a distinguished scholar at DCA, having captured top prize in the ACSI District competition for the past two years. She is also a three-year member of the school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
