Mansfield Robotics Team Reaches 22nd Season

13th Season under current Teacher Supervisor James Carver-Brown.

The Mansfield Robotics Team was started in 1989 with a singular purpose: to raise interest in engineering during a student's high school years.

Now at Mansfield High School, the program has reached its 22nd season, and is still growing.

"Over 12 years to date, over 200 students who were part of our program were able to affirm their interest in engineering and were able to pursue their passion in many colleges and universities across the U.S.," Carver-Brown said.

Carver-Brown cited a study from Brandis University that stated that students who participate in a robotics program in High School were three times more likely to major in a science or engineering field, earn an apprenticeship or internship in their first college year and were two times more likely to earn a post-graduate degree.

The study also stated that participants in the program were four times more likely to serve as community volunteers.

"So the circle does close," he said.

Mansfield Robotics Alumni have gone on to study at such institutions as Georgia Tech, Boston University, Massachusetts Institute of technology, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Northeastern University, Rutgers University and University of California.

"In each of their respective schools, their first experiences frequently give them very early recognition and opportunities," he said.

The program currently uses facilities at Invensys Process Systems just over the border in Foxborough.

"This has been a great enhancement for our team," Carver-Brown said.

The team is planning to compete at the Boston Regional Competition, presented by Boston University. They have competed in the event in the past, as well as the St. Louis Championships if they can raise enough funds.

The robotics season formally ends in May, but Carver-Brown said that the team has in the past participated in post-season events at other schools such as WPI and Northeastern.
