Mansfield Students Shine in Art Competitions

From winning awards from the Boston Globe to their art getting hung in the office of Rep. Joe Kennedy III, art students at Mansfield High School have plenty to be proud of.

For Mansfield High School artists, they are enjoying an unprecedented amount of success. Speaking to the school committee on June 4, MHS visual arts director Scott Brigante highlighted some of his student's achievements.

According to Brigante, 16 students won awards, including three Gold Key awards from in the Boston Globe's Scholastic Art Contest.

Winners included Marty Reynolds who received a Gold Key for his art portfolio and Denielle Camillo who won a Gold Key for photography.

It's been a good year for the Reynolds who also entered Rep. Joe Kennedy III's local art contest with the winners getting their art hung in his offices in the district and in Washington D.C. Reynolds received the painting award for his painting named, "Untitled." The piece will be displayed in one of Kennedy's district offices.

In a competition held by the Attleboro Arts Museum, a team of Mansfield students took home a best in show for the first time in school history.

Seeing examples of the students' work, the school committee was quite impressed with their projects and results.

“It amazes me that it’s kids doing these art projects,” committee member Michael Trowbridge said.

Superintendent Brenda Hodges was equally as proud of the art projects and the positive benifits it has.

"I could not have done justice to try to relay the awards and accolades the students have gotten by their peers and the art world,” Hodges said. "It (art) really inspires, it truly does leave to higher achievement for students."
