Mansfield Students Win First Legs of VFW Essay Contest

Commander of Mansfield's VWF Post 3264 James Morrissey presented essay awards to the 10 participants in the post.

The essay subject was what you would ask the American founding fathers. The contest is held in Massachusetts every year and awards $5,000 to the finalist. Smaller levels of awards and scholarships are given to district and individual post winners.

Eighth grader John Griffin won first place for Mansfield, while Brendan Bousquet of Mansfield won district this year and will be moving on to the state.

He won $250 for the town and $400 from the district. If he is named one of te five  state winners he will win $2,000 in scholarships, a trip to the conference in Washington D.C. and $500 in cash.

Morrissey said that Easton has won four out of five years.

"It’s great to see so many people participating as opposed to years past," Mansfield selectman George Dentino said. "The VFW has been very active and I’m grateful to all of you."

Morrissey said that Jan. 13 will be the announcement for the final winners.
