Last month, the Mansfield High School Chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 95 new members to its prestigious club. The ceremony was conducted in the high school auditorium and continues a tradition that dates back to 1921. According to its history, the National Honor Society was formed as a result of a growing need for a national organization whose objectives were as follows: “to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the nation's secondary schools.” Students inducted not only had to have an unadjusted GPA of 88% or better, but they also had to demonstrate exceptional leadership, service and character. Going forward, these same standards in academics and service must be maintained.
