An online petition demands that Mansfield schools Superintendent Brenda Hodges resign over allegation she plagiarized her commencement address last month.

There are several similarities between her speech and one delivered by U.S. Navy Admiral William McRaven during his commencement address at the University of Texas at Austin in May.

Hodges has denied stealing from McRaven's speech.

The petition, which had gathered nearly 300 signatures by Tuesday afternoon, was started by Catherine Saba. The Sun Chronicle reported Saba graduated from Mansfield High School last year.

"The status of education in the Mansfield Public School System is on the line," the petition reads. "If we want to set a good example for our students and surrounding areas of what Mansfield education is all about, we need a leader who will make the detrimental consequences of plagiarism clear and take no part in it themselves."

The School Committee was scheduled to discuss the controversy Tuesday night during a nonpublic meeting.

Mrs. Hodges is one of the nicest people I know and for this to be happening to her is so sad, my children went through this school system with Mrs. Hodges as her principal and there superintendent and they have so much respect for her, I am sadden by the lack of respect from the people of mansfield! Brenda my heart brakes for you when I read these headlines you are the most compasionate, kindest, loyal person I know and only wants what is best for this school system. You have my support in all that you do for Mansfield Public Schools!!

Not my experience with her at the HS at all. She's a rules breaker from the word go, in fact the HS was cited by DESE for violations under her watch. She has been somewhat helpful in other situations since becoming Superintendent but it's time for her to go.

If you TAKE PRIDE in our town, our schools and our children that have gone through the school system you should NOT SUPPORT a public courtroom. Check the facts and figures of the great school system. How did it get where it is? Not only by our educators but also under the overall supervision of the Superintendent of Schools. All of a sudden it is time to run her out of town after a few words that seem similar to that of another person's speech? OK so I understand the nature of the generic claim, many of us educated people have done internet research and may or may not have cited a source. But not only it is unnecessary to defame the character and career of an outstanding leader and reputation of this wonderful town but it is clearly a personnel matter to be handled by administration, should they choose to do so. It is not something that needs to be handled publicly or by opinions of past matters. If citizens have not been pleased with the leadership, petition the school committee for a change. This is NOT the method that taught here; how to jump on a bandwagon and go for the jugular.. Let town leaders do their job. If you do sign a petition, be sure it is based solely on the merits of the claim. This should NOT be personal....
