School Canceled in Mansfield For Tuesday February, 12

Once again Mansfield Public School students will have the day off.

Once again the doors to the Mansfield Public Schools will be closed as classes has been canceled for Tuesday, February 12.

The cancellation marks the third day that school has been called off due to the recent snowstorm and the fourth weather related cancellation of the school year.

"The town has been very challenged with the massive amount of snow," Mansfield Superintendent Brenda Hodges said. "It has been very challenging for the town to get all of the streets and sidewalks cleared for students to safely walk and buses to manage some of the streets."

Students will now enjoy two full days of school in the final week of school before February vacation. Students will be released 90 minutes early on Wednesday due to a previously scheduled professional development day.

Canceling school is not the answer when the streets and sidewalks are not clear "enough". A different plan needs to be in place to get the kids to school and one that involves the parents getting their kids to school safely. Put the onus on the parents and allow kids to be tardy on these days. I'm sure most parents would prefer driving their kids to school than having no school.

As I pulled out of my driveway this morning, I was singing the praises of no school for Mansfield. I had to drive my daughter to Norfolk to get a ride to a school outside of town. The theory of diving our kids to school this morning would not have been advisable, the roads were ICE, can you imagine the sidewalks. There were two accidents on West Street alone. I applaud Brenda Hodges for making a difficult decision, no matter what way she ruled...someone would be unhappy. I would rather have an extra day in June than read about an accident or God forbid fatality because we were inconvenienced another day.

She shouldn't have cancelled school on Friday. Nothing annoys me more than when school is called off before even one snowflake falls. The roads were just wet once it started snowing at 10:30am and the forcast had called for the real snow to start at 2pm, which was correct. They should have called for an early release on friday so that the day counted. I would rather make up the days now than have the kids in school until 6/30. Also, Mansfield should strongly consider beginning the school year before Labor Day.
