Consequences of Sequester Uncertain for Mansfield Schools

Superintendent Brenda Hodges said she was unsure of the effects on Mansfield if Congress fails to prevent $85 billion in automatic spending cuts by March 1.

With the uncertainty of Congress preventing $85 billion in federal sequestration spending cuts from going into effect on March 1, it is unclear if the automatic cuts will have any effect on the Mansfield Public Schools.

“We wouldn’t really be able to put an estimate on that at this point. I really don’t know what it would mean for us if it did happen,” Mansfield Public School Superintendent Brenda Hodges said.

If Congress does not take action by the end of the month, a number of automatic cuts will take place including in education. According to the Obama Administration, Massachusetts would lose almost $14 million in cuts in education.

Hodges added Mansfield does not get much federal funding or grant money because of the lack of a large amount of low income families.

“Mansfield is kind of in the middle there, that’s why we don’t qualify for grants, get Title 1 money,” she said,

Hodges also said she has heard nothing from the state to see what things would look like if the cuts go into effect.

Folks, read this: "I think I’ve seen this “Sequester” movie before. Only it had a different title — it was called “Prop 2 1/2 Override.” Obama [edit to include BOTH main parties are responsible] are trotting out the exact same scare tactics that the local teachers’ unions and assorted municipal layabouts have been employing to frighten the bejesus out of taxpayers around here for decades. It happens every spring. The schools need more money. The voters yawn. The school superintendent ups the ante and says, well, if you don’t give us the extra money then the first thing we’ll have to cut is the high school football team. Followed by the band. Not the third assistant associate deputy senior school superintendent making $120,000, but the football team. Then the selectmen threaten to close a fire station. Or lay off cops. The town dump? No longer open on weekends. The problem for the hacks is, this shakedown may work the first time, maybe even the second. But....eventually the law of diminishing returns sets in.... If kids behaved themselves and had a basic respect for the INSTITUTION of education to begin with, the money that "needs" to be spent could be cut nicely. Seriously. We don't NEED the whiteboards and the this and that- we need kids respecting teachers and sitting down and shuttin' up. No wandering around on foot in the classroom when the teacher is trying to do their job. [edit out stuff that would just disturb people] .This is where our tax money is going- to control these who rob the rest of a normal education.

Nevermind the slurs. You can't be taken seriously if you employ that nonsense. The government plays on fears, and people typically vote for what will benefit their family most. Hard to find someone who will vote for the country's health as a whole. This is our country's huge issue- no one can see past their own nose.

I really wish people would all just learn to get a long and be nicer to each other. If people stopped being so narrow minded on both sides and really thought before they acted or wrote a post this world would be a nicer place. Respect goes both ways.

Gas prices at $3.71/gallon (Rt 106 & Main St), I lost 2% of my pay starting last month, and Obama & Gov Patrick wants more of our money.. How can you expect me to be nice?
