Early Predictions Rank Mansfield Football Among State's Finest

It may be only July but that isn't stopping some from looking at the high school football landscape for this fall.

In a roundtable article, ESPN Boston took a look at who the top 10 teams are along with five other teams that will surprise.

Mansfield was listed and each of the four panelist's lists with the expectation that the offense would give opponents nightmares all season long.

"It’s going to be fun watching the way Mike Redding utilizes 6-foot-5 tight end Brendan Hill," ESPN Boston High School editor Brendan Hall said.

ESPN Boston Correspondent Adam Kurkjan added, "This is an offense that should put up in the neighborhood of 30-35 points per game, as quarterback Kyle Wisniewski has the 6-foot-5 Brendan Hill and Mike Hershman to terrorize opposing defenses."

The road to a state title however, will be more difficult than usual this season. With the state using a tournament format to decrease the amount of MIAA Super Bowl titles to six, the Hornets will have to get through teams like last year's Division 1A runner-up Barnstable, and a Natick team with a high power offense led by Troy Flutie.

Mansfield will start the regular season on September 6 in Baltimore, Maryland against Dunbar High School.
