Foxboro Legion Bounces Back With 10-8 Win Over Brookline

Foxboro traded the lead back and fourth with Brookline Post 11 before winning 10-8.

What looked to be a blowout for Foxboro Post 93 quickly turned into a high scoring slugfest. Despite having a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Foxboro traded the lead back and fourth with Brookline Post 11 in a 10-8 win over Brookline.

The first inning set the tone for the rest of the game. With the pitching all over the place, the floodgates were open for a hit parade from both teams.

“At first it looked like both (teams) were a little wild,” said Brookline coach Patrick Moore.

As bad as it was for Brookline in the top of the first inning, it was just as bad for Foxboro in the bottom of the first inning. It was a rough start for Foxboro pitcher Tom Savageau as he walked in the first two Brookline runs to cut the lead to two. A single by Henry Lucey was good enough to drive in two more runs and tie the game up at four. Brookline catcher Alex Rozek would drive in the fifth run to give Brookline a 5-4 lead after a wild first inning.

The scoring continued into the top of the second inning as Aiden Farrell singled to score Chris Johnson and advance Steve Nagle to third base.  One batter later, Nick Carafa singled to score Nagle and take a 6-5 lead after two innings.

In the bottom of the third inning, Henry Lucey singled to get Kyle Kazanjian-Amory across the plate and tie the game at 6. Campbell Narron would smash a triple to let Kazanjian-Amory score and give a 7-6 lead back to Brookline.

Foxboro’s chance to tie the game would come in the top of the fifth inning. With TJ Notarangelo on third, Vinny Monahan’s single was enough to get Notarangelo home and tie the game at seven.

In the top of the sixth inning, Foxboro would take the lead and keep it for good. Runs by Steve Nagel and Andrew Bukuras were enough to give Foxboro a 9-7 lead going into the final inning. Bukuras would get one more run in the top of the seventh to give Foxboro a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Brookline would have one more chance to try to win the game. Despite getting men on base and scoring a run, it would not be enough for Post 11 as Foxboro was able to win 10-8.

It was a big game for Foxboro’s Vinny Monahan. Continuing to gain momentum along with the rest of the bottom of the order, Monahan went 3-4 with a RBI and a double.

“He’s swinging good. The bottom of the order is really producing,” said Foxboro coach Bill Travers.

Also hitting well for Foxboro was Aiden Farrell who went 3-4 with a run, 3 RBIs, and a double. Tom Brady went 2-3 with a run, a RBI, and a triple. On the mound, Brady threw for 3.2 innings, striking out 2 and giving up 2 earned runs. Steve Nagle also went 2-5 with 2 runs, a RBI, and a double.

For Brookline, Kyle Kazanjian-Amory continued to be on a roll, going 2-3 with 2 runs, a RBI, a double.

“Kyle’s been hot for us lately," Moore said. "He’s been in the middle of our line up for a reason."

Henry Lucey went 2-2 with a run and 3 RBIs. Zach Nelson went 1-3 with 2 runs, a hit, and a double.

With the win, Foxboro improves to 5-8 while Brookline is now 5-9. It was a big win for a team that is fighting for the last playoff spot in the District 6 West Division.

“We’re almost in we have to win now mode,” said Travers.

Next up for Foxboro will be a matchup with Norwood. In their last meeting, Norwood defeated Foxboro, 14-2. Game time is set for 7:30 at the Balch School in Norwood on Friday July 1.
