Foxboro Legion Loses Another Close One Run Game

Foxborough loses another close one to Medfield 5-4.

After previous night’s close loss against Walpole, Foxboro Post 93 was looking to avoid another close defeat. Despite having leads of 2-0 and 4-3, Medfield Post 45 was too much for Foxboro, winning, 5-4.

The Foxboro bats came alive early in the game. With two on base and two outs, Tom Brady’s single brought in Aiden Farrell and advanced Nick Carafa to third to put Foxboro on the board, 1-0. A Tom Savageau double got Carafa home but Brady got called out at home plate to end the top of the first inning.

Not to be outdone, Medfield’s Nick Santangelo was able to score after a single by James Magrath to cut the Foxboro lead in half. Four batters later passed a ball got James Sullivan home to tie the game. Brady, who is not the regular catcher found himself in a tough position after Foxboro’s main catcher was unavailable.

“He’s not really the catcher but I gotta give the other guy (Mitch Goldenberg) a little rest,” said Foxboro head coach Bill Travers.

Medfield took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after Magrath’s double to center field drove in Santangelo to take a 3-2 lead over Foxboro.

The lead didn't last for long. In the top of the fifth, Carafa’s single to left field was enough to get Steve Nagle home to tie the game. One batter later, Brady was able to hit a sacrifice fly out to give enough time for Farrell to score from third and take a 4-3 lead over Medfield.

Despite being up by a run, Foxboro could not find any momentum to grow the lead. With bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth inning, Post 93 could not find a way to score.

“You gotta score with your three, four hitter up bases loaded,” said Travers.

The top of the sixth inning would come back to haunt Foxboro a half inning later.  With runners on first base and third base, Will Cousins singled to right field to bring in Gabe Mirabelli and tie the game at 4. James Magrath gavee Medfield the lead and the winning run after a passed ball gave him the chance to steal home plate and give Medfield a 5-4 lead.

It was another tough loss for a Foxboro team that has now lost two one-run games in a row.

“We did all the little things wrong again,” said Travers. “Right now, we need to play fundamental baseball... just making too many mistakes.”

Brady led the Foxboro offensive attack going 1-2 with three RBI. Tom Savageau went 2-3. Nagle went 1-2 with a run. Carafa went 2-4 with a run and a RBI.

For Medfield, James Magrath went 3-4 with a run and 2 RBI.  Will Cousins went 1-4 with a RBI. Nick Santangelo went 1-2 with a run. James Sullivan went 1-3 with a run.

On the mound, Carafa struck out 6 with four earned runs over six innings for Foxboro. For Medfield, Derek Latosek struck out and gave up four earned runs over 4.2 innings. In relief work, Jake Mintz pitch 0.1 innings and Walker Littlehale struck out 1 and gave up no runs over 2 innings of actions.

With the loss, Foxboro is now under .500 for the first time this season with a record of 3-4. Meanwhile, Medfield improves to 4-3.

Next up for Foxboro will be a matchup against Norfolk. The game is set for 5:45 p.m. at Freeman-Centennial Field in Norfolk Thursday, June 23.
