It was a rough outing for Foxboro Post 93 Thursday evening against Norwood Post 70. Facing a Norwood team with active bats all night, Foxborough struggled to a 14-2 loss to Norwood.
From the start, it looked like things were not going to go Foxborough’s way. Norwood got four quick runs on the board in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of Foxborough pitcher Bobby Joyce.
“I knew right away first couple of hitters he (Bobby) just didn’t have anything,” said Foxboro coach Bill Travers.

Even after bringing in pitcher Adam Blake, the Norwood bats would not be denied. Norwood’s Brandon David padded the lead with a 3 run home run in the top of the second inning to extend the lead to 8-0. For David, it was another big hit in his continuing success playing at Foxboro High School.
“He’s hit a home run every time he’s played at this field…That was big because that gave us some separation,” said Norwood coach Paul Samargedlis.

That would not be the only home run of the evening. John Gorman would smack a 2 run home run to center field in top of the fourth inning to continue what was a very good day for Norwood and a very bad day for Foxboro.
“Everything that could go bad went bad,” said Travers.
It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the 4th that Foxboro would get on the board. Already down 14-0, Steven Wholley doubled to score Mitchell Goldenberg and make it a 14-1 game.
Later in the bottom of the 6th, Steve Fitzmaurice scored on a ground out by Goldenberg.
It was a very active day at the plate for Norwood. John Gorman led the way for Norwood going 4-4 with 3 runs, 5 RBIs and a home run. Christopher O’Brien went 3-4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI. Sean Keady went 4-4 with 2 runs, 2 doubles and a RBI. Overall it was a very successful day for a team that knew how to swing the bat well.
“We just swung today like a team that’s not gonna miss anything,” said Samargedlis.
Things were less successful on Foxboro’s end. Mitchell Goldenberg went 1-3 with a run and a RBI. Steve Fitzmaurice went 1-3 with a hit and a run.
Despite the win, Norwood is not using the game as a testament to Foxboro’s level of talent. While winning 14-2, they know that it would be unwise to underestimate Foxboro again in their rematch on July 1st.
“I’m sure next time we play Foxboro it will be a nail biter. That’s how it’s been with them,” said Samargedlis.
While Norwood celebrates their win, Foxboro is left to try to quickly forget about the game and move on. Even in defeat, coach Bill Travers still sees the loss as a learning experience for his young team.
“You can always learn something even in a bad game and that’s what I want them to do and hopefully they did,” said Travers.
With the loss, Foxboro now stands at 2-2 while Norwood improves to 2-1 Next up for Foxboro is a matchup with Needham Post 14 on Friday June 17th. The road game at Needham High School will be the first game under the lights for Foxboro with a start time of 7pm. Norwood will also be on the road for their next game. They face Canton Post 24 at 5:45 on the 17th.
