Hornets Baseball Falls to Oliver Ames in Extra Innings Showdown

Despite taking a 2-1 lead after the fourth inning, the Hornets lost to the Oliver Ames Tigers 4-3 in nine innings.

While it didn't take long for the Oliver Ames Tigers to get on the board against the Mansfield Hornets, holding the lead was a different story. Despite a fourth inning comeback by the Hornets, the Tigers held on to beat Mansfield 4-3 in extra innings.

OA struck first early in the first inning when Michael McMillan's double brought David MacKinnon home for the opening run of the game.

Later in the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded, a fielding error by the Tigers gave Mike Cunningham enough time to score from third and tie the game. A sacrifice fly ball a batter later from Chris Buchanan gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead.

The Mansfield advantage would not last long as a single from McMillan brought in the tying run, and then McMillan himself would score the go-ahead run off a Mansfield passed ball.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Zac Courier's single put the tying run on first base with only one out. Cunningham's hit was enough to allow Courier to tie the game but the Mansfield first baseman was unlucky when he was called out trying to turn a double into a triple.

The game winning run would come in extra innings during the top of the ninth inning. With two outs and McMillan on third, a third strike that got away from the Hornets gave the OA star time to score the fourth Tiger run of the day and give Oliver Ames the win.

The Hornets are back in action on April 8 at Milford while Oliver Ames will face North Attleboro on the same day.
