Hornets Boys' Hoops Blow Out North Attleboro, Girls Fall to Red Rocketeers

The boys beat North Attleboro 69-30 but the girls loss 63-35.

From start to finish the Mansfield Hornets boys’ basketball team easily controlled the tempo of the game against the outmatched North Attleboro Red Rocketeers. Winning 69-30, the Hornets improve to 10-1.

Despite a low scoring affair for most of the first quarter, the Hornets started to get some seperation with two baskets and two free throws from Zach Wisnieski late in the first and early in the second quarter.

During the game, the mid-court presence of Rocky DeAndrade pressured the North Attleboro offense as steals by the Mansfield guard quickly turned into fast break points.

“He’s starting to pick his points in the game where he’s getting to the lane a little bit more and scoring some baskets. He’s changing up our tempo a little bit in terms of playing quick and sometimes playing slow,” Hornets head coach Michael Vaughan said.

DeAndarde had a game high 15 points for the Hornets including nine in the first half.

In the girls’ game, the Hornets were able to hang with the Red Rocketeers for almost all of the first half but struggling to drive to the basket, the Mansfield girls were defeated 63-35.

Early on, a pair of baskets from Erin Galvin gave the Hornets a 7-2 lead, but North Attleboro would come back with help from Meg Ronaghan and Melissa Beaupre to take a slim 13-11 lead after the first quarter.

Tied at 13 in the second, the Hornets were able to keep the score tight but a late run to end the half by the Red Rocketeers left Mansfield down by eight at halftime.

Outscoring Mansfield 15-8 in the third quarter put away the Hornets as the North Attleboro defense made life difficult all night under the basket.

Ronaghan had a game high 34 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Rocketeers while Beaupre had 12 points.

Galvin had nine points and nine rebounds for the Hornets.

Mansfield will host Canton on January 21.
