Mansfield High Wrestling Places Second At Hockomock League Meet

Hornets place 10 wrestlers in top four during competition Saturday. Team to face Wrentham tonight.

The Mansfield High wrestling team placed a total of 10 competitors in the top four of their respective divisions on the way to a second-place finish at the Hockomock League Championship Meet Saturday, Jan. 29 at North Attleboro High School.

Franklin followed up its Large School Division dual-meet crown by finishing first at the league meet with a total of 182 points. Mansfield was second with 170 points, while the host Rocketeers were third with 158.5. King Philip placed fourth at the meet with 125.5 points and Small School Division dual-meet champion Foxboro was fifth with 120.5.

On an individual basis, Franklin, King Philip and Foxboro all claimed three champions on the day, while Canton had two.

Chris Kelly (119 pounds), Greg Williams (125) and Tim Gillis (145) each garnered crowns for the Panthers, while Logan David (112), Austin Brais (140) and Tyler Florio (160) all won titles for King Philip.

Bryan Dorman captured the championship at 130 pounds for Foxboro with teammates Dan Driscoll (171) and Vic Avery (189) also winning titles. Avery, who is headed to Edinboro University in Pennsylvania in the fall, was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the meet with his performance at 189 pounds.

Canton also had a good day with Chris Sullivan capturing the 103-pound crown and teammate Kevin Connolly winning the individual title at 135.

North Attleboro’s Joe Krzyzek won the title at 152, while Mansfield senior captain Kyle McGuire earned first-place honors in the 215-pound tournament. Stoughton’s Andrew Paredes won the championship at 285 pounds to round out the event.

It was a terrific day overall for the placing 10 wrestlers in the top four of their respective weight classes. McGuire led the way with his title at 215.

Senior Domenick Auld finished in second place in the 130-pound tournament as did junior Dan Gilmore at 152 pounds and classmate Derrion Walker at 160.

Mansfield also had five wrestlers earn third-place finishes. Senior Brett Reed was third at 103 pounds as was freshman Aurian Dawkins at 112 and sophomore Joe Herrick at 125.

Junior Tom Maguire placed third in the 135-pound tournament as did senior captain Henry Larose in the 140-pound competition. Senior captain Mike Trowbridge finished in fourth place at 285 pounds.

After having its league finale against King Philip on Wednesday postponed, Mansfield will head to Wrentham to face the Warriors in a Large School Division meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Hornets will then compete in the Division 1 South Team Tournament on Saturday.
