Mansfield's Wiseman, Vanderbilt Wrap up SEC Crown

Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman is making an impact as a freshman at Vanderbilt University.

 

Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman can add being a member of the Southeastern Conference baseball title team to his impressive resume. The freshman outfielder and his Vanderbilt University teammates defeated the University of Kentucky in a doubleheader sweep Sunday to wrap up the crown.

Vanderbilt is 24-2 in the SEC with a three-game series left with Alabama, starting Thursday. Overall, they will take a 45-6 record into Tuesday's home contest against Belmont University.

The Commodres will be one of the favorites in the upcoming College World Series. Vanderbilt was featured in this week's Sports Illustrated. Senior outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Red Sox great and Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, was also featured in Sunday's New York Times.

Going into the Belmont game, the left-handed hitting Wiseman has appeared in 41 games with four starts. He is batting .284 on the year, going 25 for 88, with three homers, 14 RBI is five for five in stolen base opponents. His best game of the year was April 16 when he hit two homers in a non-conference win over Tennessee-Martin.
